WELCOME BACK, STUDENTS You'll notice that a few things have changed at the shop. Our friends at Real Records "retired" - they're going to move online and do a million other things besides - and we adopted the space to expand the bookshop. Most things are in roughly the same areas as before, but never hesitate to ask if you wonder where a section has moved. There are more books to browse than we've ever had before, and more chairs and tables for browsers, readers, and people looking for a quiet place to study. Find your nook and make yourself at home! Among the events coming up this fall, we'll continue our reading group meetings as well as a new series of book readings featuring authors like James Joyce, D. H. Lawrence, Henry James, and other folks who might not have a new bestseller out but still deserve an evening to share their best passages with you. (We're planning more readings for next year. Do you have an author you'd like us to feature? Let us know!) One more note: We continue to accept donations of books in good condition for our Benefit Sale. The money we raise from that sale goes directly to Local Foods Connection - every single penny - and we're thrilled and grateful that Iowa City and friends helped us to raise over $2,000 for LFC last year! |
21 April 2011 - PATRICK ROTHFUSS The highly acclaimed (and New York Times bestselling) author of The Name of the Wind and Wise Man's Fear read from, signed, and answered questions about his books in our newly redesigned stage area on Thursday. He also showed us neat MRI pictures of his brain. Did everybody have a good time? I hope so - we certainly did. Thank you VERY much to Pat Rothfuss for the phone call that set up this reading and a wonderful evening, and thank you to every one of our guests for coming here and helping us to show the author a good time.
31 March 2011 - EXPANSION UNDERWAY We have acquired an additional 1,000 square feet and are working on new rooms for children's book, history, and philosophy and religion. Many thanks to Sam Larsen, Ross T. Byers, Sydney Smith, Josh Langseth, and the staff of the bookshop for all the hard work! We remain open during our renovations. If your favorite section has moved, don't hesitate to ask where it went; more signs will go up as we complete more of the construction. *** Our friends and neighbors Real Records have officially closed their storefront in preparation for a change to online business. Soon, you'll be able to buy from their new website. Many thanks to the patrons of both stores for your ongoing encouragement and support. Just a thought - it might be nice to drop Craig and Janet Kessler a line to let them know how much they have added to our community over the years. They've been an amazing resource for Iowa City, and we will miss our "roomates" a lot.
22 March 2011 - How We Support the Classics We believe very strongly that a well-rounded education should include study of the ancient world, its history, philosophies, religions, literature, and languages. Our culture today has been shaped by the civilizations of the Mediterranean and Near East, and it's important for writers and historians, scholars of religion and philosophy, people curious about the history of ideas or the major Western faiths, and lovers of literature and language to understand the enormous impact of early civilizations on our own. We also believe that our country would benefit greatly from support for the study of ideas about civic participation, rhetoric, and ethics described by the writers of the ancient world. Now more than ever, voters, community workers, and people who represent causes should give serious thought to the cultures that established our traditions of public service and republic. The Haunted Bookshop has, therefore, committed to fund an endowment in the Classics at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Haunted owner Nialle has donated $5,000 so far and will continue to give annually. Our eventual goal is to endow a permanent chair in the Classics, and we invite our friends to help us in reaching this goal. Look for more information as we develop a secure donation portal and expand on the objectives of the future Sylvan Chair in the Classics. Meanwhile, later this year (after our next big expansion!), watch for events sponsored by the Sylvan Chair Fund, including open read-throughs of the plays of Aeschylus and contemporaries, history discussion forums, a speech contest, and games for young folks. If you're a Facebook user, you can check out our fan page. 8 July 2010 - Over 13,000 New Arrivals In November of 2009, we purchased The Bookery, long an established Iowa City bookshop, lately an in-home business. Owner Joe Michaud is retiring to pursue his writing career; titles already in print include Along the Iron Curtain, a memoir of his military service, and Booking in Iowa, a memoir of bookselling with profiles of various eastern Iowa bookshops of yesterday and today. (Both titles are available for sale at The Haunted Bookshop.) We are pleased to announce that, following some rebuilding and rearranging, we have now incorporated the Bookery collection into the Haunted's existing location at 203 North Linn Street. Check out the expanded History, Religion, Philosophy, Art, Children's Nonfiction, Native American Studies, Books on Books, Iowa history, and more! 26 May 2010 - Welcome Summer Writers! We're looking forward to meeting participants in this year's Summer Writing Program at the University of Iowa. Writers, check your welcome packets for the gold bookmark with Murphy Brookfield books on one side and The Haunted Bookshop on the other - there's a coupon on each end for your use in each shop. If you pre-shop by searching our stock online, just remember two important things: select "This Site" from the top drop-down menu to limit your search to books at this location (the others are stocked by our partner bookshops around the world) and, if you see something you'd like us to hold for you, you may email us requesting a hold up to one week in advance of your visit. Oh, one more thing - we only have our 6,000 most unusual books online. There are 40,000 books in the store. Bring your homework and enjoy our tables and comfy chairs; find books by your favorite authors; meet our friendly cats (they love attention). We're happy to answer any questions about Iowa City or particular books, and we have a large section of books on writing technique for those looking for additional resources. Make yourselves at home! |
The Haunted Bookshop, Iowa City's oldest secondhand bookshop, carries over 40,000 used, rare, out of print and antiquarian titles in over 50 different subject areas, specializing in poetry, literature, first and signed editions, and Iowa-related books, with wide selections of history, philosophy, plays, children's and young-adult, literary nonfiction, and more. We are located in the Northside district in an historic building, its rooms lined with shelves and comfortable chairs, its walls offering toys, games, cards, and more. Our friendly and quirky staff delight in helping visitors to find old book-friends and new, and we pride ourselves on resourcefulness and individual attention to our guests. We are fond of avid readers, browsers, families, students, teachers, literary reviewers, artists, writers, and other good company; we welcome book groups and community organisations; and we delightedly encourage storytelling, reading aloud, book recommendation, puppet shows (use ours or bring your own), and spontaneous performances by visiting piano players. |
