Near the side door of The Haunted Bookshop is a room of hardcovers for $1 each and paperbacks for 50¢.

This selection is a benefit sale for Local Foods Connection, a locally based non-profit organization that assists families in need by helping them to obtain healthy, fresh, locally produced foods. All proceeds from this sale go directly to this wonderful group. (We don't take fees or commissions - your money for these books goes straight to the LFC.)

The founder and executive director of Local Foods Connection is Laura Dowd. Not only do we admire what she and her group accomplish for the community, we also think she's a great photographer - we have a selection of greeting cards made from her beautiful pictures for sale up front - and an extraordinary friend.

Over the years, Laura has given us moral support, encouragement, mutual website links, soup, flowers, help with sandbagging and moving books, and even a plaid bathrobe when one of us needed a quick costume for a masquerade party. We feel so privileged to know her and to be counted among her friends. Laura, thank you for everything you give, to us and to Iowa City.
